Dyslexia and Speech Pathology

How can Speech Pathologists help with dyslexia and learning disorders? Last week I had a “Google Hangout” date with Michelle Morrow from Homeschooling Down Under. I was invited to chat with her about how Speech Pathologists work with young children and students to identify and circumvent dyslexia. Check out our hangout session on Youtube.

I have always been passionate about education. As a parent who has educated my three children for several years, I have seen first hand the complexities that are involved in teaching a child to read and write. Reading and spelling does not come naturally to all of us. I am committed to helping children find their path towards literacy and learning. You may wonder what relationship dyslexia and Speech Pathology have to each other. Reading, writing and spelling are skills which are firmly rooted in language. From their earliest moments of language learning children are progressing towards achieving this wonderful skill called literacy. Their progression through learning language (understanding concepts, developing their vocabulary) and speech (hearing sounds in words) leads them to apply their knowledge of words and sounds. This is the beginning of reading, writing and spelling. A child needs to have well developed speech and language skills, and strong skills in listening and processing sounds in order to tackle the tasks of literacy.

If you are concerned that your child is not progressing with reading and spelling as quickly as you think they should, contact Newcastle Speech Pathology to discuss your child’s needs.
